How to choose your instrument.

Finding the right optics depends entirely on what you want to observe and where you plan to take it. Follow these steps to narrow down your choice.

Define your primary target

Are you fascinated by the moon and planets, or do you want to hunt faint deep-sky objects? Refractors excel at planets, while large reflectors gather more light for galaxies.

Consider portability

The best telescope is the one you actually use. If you need to travel to dark skies, prioritize compact catadioptric designs or sturdy binoculars over massive Dobsonian bases.

Select the right mount

A shaky mount ruins a great optical tube. Choose an altazimuth mount for simple up-down tracking, or an equatorial mount to smoothly follow the rotation of the starry sky.
